The Psychopath Test

I have had more than one man tell me “I do not know the meaning of love”. I resent that, but it’s like B.O. or stupidity – if you are told you offend for a particular reason, by more than one person, it is worth looking into (I suppose). And even though I dislike the concept of autopsying my deepest emotions or eviscerating my take on all the synonyms for “love”, I do have strong feelings for my children, a few friends, former lovers, family and my dog (sort of), so I know I have the capacity for tenderness…

At the same time I was mulling my seeming inability to exhibit deep feelings, I listened to a This American Life podcast about The Psychopath Test – the real one invented by Dr. Hare and used in prisons to determine whether an inmate is ready to join society or not. I learned a true psychopath has no empathy, no feelings, no ability to care for anyone or anything. Smart psychopaths can fake it, but they do not actually feel anything.

I also learned there is little written about psychopathy and alcoholism. Except for a few chat rooms where women describe the “icy remoteness” of their significant other’s stare when they drink, there is little data. And as to the cold, in-the-cups stare, we’ve all done that. I am glad to learn there is not some strong correlation between alcohol and serial killers, because I have enough to worry about…

For some reason being a Psychopath sounds less mundane to me, than being “unfeeling”.  Does that make me unfeeling? A psychopath? I’m not going to lie – I took the test…

My very favorite psycho…

Have a nice day.

Today I’m not drinking because I am a little worried about my seeming “unfeelingness” and alcohol anesthetizes…

How come you’re not drinking?
