Drinking Dream (Nightmares)…

Drinking Dream (Nightmares)…

Drinking Dream (Nightmares)…

Yikes – I had a drinking dream!

Whoa. I have to hurry to get this down. And this is not going to be some snippet of a pretty memory. Because I had a drinking dream last night. I was at a dinner party with a bunch of people and everyone was pouring drinks and I thought, Oh I’ll just have a taste, and I poured a glass of white wine…  You know those dreams where you’re out cold, but in your head you are saying, “Oh, oh..” because you know a nightmare is coming but you can’t stop it? Like walking down a black hallway? Or heading down the steps of a basement?

In the dream I poured another and I could tell I was heading for a bender, because I was hiding how much I was drinking from all the people at the party (random folks I know and those I conjured – people who would never be together). I went into the kitchen and downed a glass.

Here’s the worst part – I could taste it. And I could feel myself getting drunk.

What a horror show. Nightmare. Bad, bad drinking dream … I woke this morning at 7:30 – slept 9 hours solid. I always wake at 5 or so, and I was in a state of panic. Like, did I do it??? Did I drink last night? I actually leaned over to see if a bottle and glass were on the floor. And I felt my head to see if I had a fever. I don’t really have time to process it yet – shower and running for work.

Has having a drinking dream ever happened to you??? Seriously, Has it?

Somebody get me a dream-catcher

Please.

Today I’m not drinking because I’m having a drinking dream …

How come you’re not drinking?

    How come you're not drinking?
    Welcome to recovery
Ah! The drinking dream! Most of us have them, in some form or another. Mine usually skip the actual drinking and go straight to the after-party of panic, remorse, immediately scheming how to “get away with it” by lying, deceiving, hiding, denying, whatever it takes. In other words, back to square one. Horrid things, they sometimes linger like the stink of a dead skunk on the road, slimy on the skin, but a good shower to clear the head and a moment of gratitude for another day of sobriety, then a plunge back into the mainstream of a life well lived will put it back into perspective as a wonderfully vivid reminder of just how awful things would be if we took that first drink.

It’s funny you mention it, but I did feel guilty in the dream – I was sneaking the wine, but my impression was that the other people in the dream didn’t care… It was like a weird self-punishment. Still can’t shake it, but I will when the fog clears. Thanks for always putting things into perspective.

    121 days...
I still dream about smoking cigarettes from time to time even though it has been over 17 YEARS since my last one. Just because the tiger is sleeping doesn’t mean it isn’t still growing.

Or still powerful and capable of dangerous things… I almost feel like it was my body telling me not to get too cocky. It was horrible in its vividness. I am going to try to forget it…
Congratulations by the way – you are awesome.

Yes …and it is the worst feeling. All around. It makes me feel uneasy for days.. I was always afraid to share this because it does play with your mind….and makes you feel like you might be losing it. And until I read this I really didn’t realize others had similar experiences. Thank you to all the people willing to step up and tell me I am not alone. Oddest thing is when I was drinking, I never felt aware of my poor reality perception. But now sober….it seems to slowly ooze out in different ways and different times. Sometimes being sober feels uncomfortable and a bit unnerving.

I had someone tell me he woke with the smell of Whisky on his pillow – and yes sober is a bit unnerving sometimes. The good news is that even in my dream I was thinking, “You better not do this…” so even my subconscious is on board.
