Today I’d like to talk about drinking’s ugly sister – smoking. People still do that you know. Even though these days we have too many facts. We’ve all seen those people on the Truth ads who rasp through synthesizers with ghastly scars above their hearts, their teenage son’s giving them sponge baths in horrible hospital beds because they smoked.
I think those ads effect real smokers the way the lollypop, tomb stone, roadside signs warning us to DRIVE SAFELY used to stop me from driving drunk. In other words not at all. No one thinks as they light up, “Oh wait, I saw that ad on TV that said I’d lose my teeth and breath through a tube if I do this…” or, “Steady on – if I get behind the wheel to go buy another bottle of sweet and cheap now, I might die in a fiery crash – I saw a sign…”
Because smokers and drinkers and ad men all know…
… we do it because of the danger.
Today I’m not drinking because I saw a lollypop, tombstone, roadside sign that said DRIVE SAFELY.
How come you’re not drinking?
